Mark McGarryMeet Mark McGarry, Head Brewer at Tyne Bank Brewery Ltd. Tyne Bank based in Byker, Newcastle was established in early 2011 and is the brainchild of Julia Austin, who started the brewery after taking voluntary redundancy from her job as a chemical engineer. Before this she worked in the paint division of Nissan as a development engineer, before moving on to work as a production manager at US firm Arizona Chemicals.

Julia was inspired after visiting Granville Island Brewing in Vancouver, Canada, where she was bitten by the beer- making bug. Also spurred on by engineer husband John to make a decent pint; this plus the downturn in the chemical industry decided Julia to turn to brewing. (more…)

Desert Island Beers – Denzil Vallance

This weeks Desert Island Beers features the co-founder and owner of Great Heck Brewing Company, Great Heck, North Yorkshire, Denzil Vallance. Heart-throb Denzil was born in Bradford in the golden summer of 1970. He says his journey into brewing began with a sip of Double Diamond at the breakfast table in Pateley Bridge 3 short years later, but unfortunately that put him off English Ale for approximately 30 years until his interest was rekindled towards the end of his “spectacularly successful motorcycle racing career”.
