Blackjack Brewery – Manchester
“A new brewery has just started up in Manchester called ‘Blackjack Beers’. It’s run by an ex-brewer (Rob Hamilton) from Marble ……. good credentials. I tried one of their beers in the Crown & Kettle in Manchester a couple of days ago and it was very good (just like a Marble beer, surprisingly). Anyhow, one to watch, if you’ve not already seen it.”
Rob I understand first came to Manchester 12 years ago from Wrexham to study and has never gone back having worked at Marble Brewery and the Marble Arch, for the past five years. He has however in recent months acquired the old 4.5 barrel brewing kit that was in the Marble Arch pub and installed it in a railway arch close to Manchester’s Northern Quarter on Gould Street, off Rochdale Road, not far from Marble’s new premises on Wood Street.
Rob apparently has a fondness for darker beers but he has assured all that paler offerings will be brewed too.
Anyway a few days after said Email I found myself in Manchester and was lucky enough to chance upon one of the promised paler offerings, Blackjack New Deck 4.2%, in the Bar Fringe and it was bloody excellent.
After one pint I am not going to claim the similarly railway arch located Blackjack as the new Kernel Brewery of the north or say the next Buxton Brewery, but for those of you who are fans of Marble Brewery you should definitely aim to try some of Rob’s creations and I for one will certainly be looking out for more of his beers over the next few months.
